LearnfulCongratulations to the team behind K-12 Studio, shortlisted for a 2026 Open Education Award from Open Education Global (OEGlobal), in the Open Practices category for Facilitating Collaboration Among K-12 Teachers.
K-12 Studio is a Canadian, open platform built for teachers to share, discover, and adapt classroom materials, with a particular focus on Ontario’s K-12 French as a Second Language (FSL) community. It’s led by York University’s Marie Péguret and Mirela Cherciov, and funded by Canadian Heritage and the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Built on our OER Studio platform
K-12 Studio is built on Learnful’s OER Studio platform. When Péguret and Cherciov set out to design an FSL-focused open resource hub for Ontario teachers, we worked with them to shape it: licensing clarity, straightforward language, quick access to Ontario-aligned resources, an AI-assisted submission process, and the collaboration tools that let teachers share and adapt each other’s materials. That early work, and the consultations and testing that followed, is what became the platform teachers use today.
It’s a genuinely nice thing to watch a project we helped build grow into something a national and international open education community is recognizing on its own merits.
Why this one matters
FSL teachers in Ontario have long dealt with a fragmented resource landscape: materials scattered across personal drives, inconsistent licensing, and an overreliance on materials built for other markets entirely. K-12 Studio set out to fix that by building a culture of sharing and collaboration among the teachers actually doing the work, not just a repository someone uploads to once and forgets.
That’s the part of “open education” that’s easy to skip past: openness isn’t just free access to existing material, it’s building the infrastructure and the norms that make ongoing sharing and adaptation actually happen. K-12 Studio’s shortlisting is recognition of exactly that groundwork.
